Write a Jira search for the bugs that block a release

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Write one JQL query for the triage board: bugs in project MOB with priority High or Highest, labeled ios, that are still unresolved, created on or after 2026-10-01. Your team closes tickets with the statuses Done, Won't Fix and Duplicate, so exclude all three (or use resolution is EMPTY). Sort by priority, highest first, then oldest created first. One code block, then under 25 words outside the code.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not listing the end states. The AI only excludes Done, so Won't Fix and Duplicate tickets clog the board. Try: Add: "Exclude Done, Won't Fix and Duplicate."
  • Leaving out the filters. The AI keeps Android and low-priority bugs because it doesn't know the board's scope. Try: Add: "Only priority High or Highest, label ios, created since 2026-10-01."
  • Leaving the sort open. The AI keeps newest-first, so old blockers sink to the bottom. Try: Add: "ORDER BY priority DESC, created ASC."
  • Getting a menu of options. The AI likes to offer two or three versions of the query, so you're left to pick and test them yourself. Try: Add: "Give one query only, in one code block, no alternatives."
  • Getting a tutorial. By default the AI explains every part of the code at length, which you then have to scroll past. Try: Add: "After the code, one line under 10 words. Nothing else."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Lists the end states
  • Sets the scope
  • Sets the date
  • Sets the sort
  • Asks for one answer only
