Show price per square foot as a ready-to-paste label
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Write one Google Sheets formula for D2 (filled down) that shows the list price in B2 divided by the square feet in C2 as text exactly like $412/sq ft, rounded to whole dollars with a comma for thousands. Listings with no square footage yet (blank or 0) must show No sq ft. One formula in one code block, then under 25 words outside the code.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not showing the label. The AI returns a plain number like 412.198, which you then have to format by hand. Try: Add: "Text exactly like $412/sq ft, whole dollars, comma for thousands."
- Forgetting missing footage. Blank or 0 square feet gives #DIV/0! on a printed flyer. Try: Add: "Blank or 0 sq ft shows No sq ft."
- Getting a menu of options. The AI likes to offer two or three versions of the formula, so you're left to pick and test them yourself. Try: Add: "Give one formula only, in one code block, no alternatives."
- Getting a tutorial. By default the AI explains every part of the code at length, which you then have to scroll past. Try: Add: "After the code, one line under 10 words. Nothing else."
What a strong prompt includes
- Shows the label
- Asks for rounding
- Handles missing footage
- Asks for one answer only
- Limits the explanation
