Write the first prompt for a classroom vocab quiz app

  • For Teachers
  • You practice Giving the right context
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Write the first prompt you'll paste into an AI app builder to make a vocab quiz app for your 6th graders. Put the whole prompt in one code block of at most 15 lines so you can copy it, with at most one short line outside it. The prompt must say: no login, nothing saved about students (no names or scores stored), works on the school's Chromebooks, uses your 10 words, and leaves out the features you decided against. It must end by asking the builder to list the screens it plans and wait for your OK before building.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Forgetting privacy. AI builders add logins and save scores by default. Try: Add: "No login. Store nothing about students: no names, no scores."
  • No device context. The builder designs for a big laptop screen unless told. Try: Add: "Must work on school Chromebooks in Chrome, 11-inch screens."
  • Letting it build right away. Builders start coding immediately, so you find problems only after. Try: End with: "First list the screens you plan, and wait for my OK before building."
  • Adding rejected features. The AI suggests a leaderboard and timer because quiz apps usually have them. Try: Add: "Don't add a leaderboard, sounds or a timer."
  • A prompt you can't copy. The AI wraps the prompt in explanations, tips and several code blocks. Try: Say: "Put the whole prompt in one code block, at most 15 lines. Nothing else."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Covers privacy
  • Gives the device
  • Rules out features
  • Asks for one copyable block
  • Asks for a plan first
