Write flash fiction prompts that fit your class rules
- For Teachers
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You need writing prompts for your 9th grade flash fiction unit. Get exactly 5 numbered prompts formatted "1. Prompt: ... | Must include: ...", where each "Must include" names one word from this unit's vocabulary list. Each prompt under 25 words, under 160 words in total, plain text. Your district bans violence and romance in prompts, and every prompt must be set somewhere at your school or in your town.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not stating district rules. AI story prompts often lean on danger or crushes, which your district bans. Try: Add: "No violence or romance."
- Generic settings. Without your places, the AI sets prompts in castles and spaceships. Try: Add: "Set each one at a place from my notes, like Rosie's Diner or the greenhouse."
- Skipping the vocabulary. The AI won't tie prompts to your unit words unless asked. Try: Show it: "1. Prompt: ... | Must include: hesitate"
- Getting a long list. AI prompt lists come as 10 to 20 ideas with explanations. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 5 numbered prompts, each under 25 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in a handout. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
