Work out what leaving a lease early would cost you
- For College students
- You practice Showing an example of what you want
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You might leave your apartment on June 1 instead of the lease end, and your roommate is staying. Using the lease's early termination clause, get exactly 4 numbered lines in plain text, under 80 words: 1. the last day to give notice, with the date math; 2. the termination payment, with the math; 3. your half of it; 4. "This isn't legal advice." Use only the lease. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the addendum. The AI uses Section 6's two months and misses the September amendment. Try: Add: "Use the Sept 2 addendum: one and a half months' rent."
- No math shown. The AI gives totals with no working, so you can't check them. Try: Show it: "2. Payment: $1,380 x 1.5 = $2,070".
- No notice date. The AI says "60 days' notice" without the date. Try: Add: "Line 1: June 1 minus 60 days = [date]."
- Answering the legal question. The AI weighs in on whether a replacement roommate cancels the fee. Try: Add: "Use only the lease. Line 4: This isn't legal advice."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 16 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses the addendum
- Asks for the notice date
- Asks for your share
- Adds the disclaimer
- Sets a word limit
