About this exercise

You're comparing two renters insurance policies. Work out what each would cost you in a year where your $1,200 laptop is stolen: premiums for 12 months plus what you'd pay before insurance covers the rest. Get exactly 3 numbered lines in plain text, under 70 words: one per policy with the math, then which costs less in that year and by how much. Use the updated premium. No advice. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the old premium. The AI uses $12 and misses the updated quote. Try: Add: "Use Hearthstone's updated $14 premium."
  • Comparing premiums only. The AI says Policy B is cheaper, like your roommate, and never counts the deductible. Try: Say: "Add 12 months of premiums plus the deductible I'd pay on a $1,200 claim."
  • No math shown. The AI gives totals with no working, so you can't check them. Try: Show it: "1. Policy A: $14 x 12 = $168 + $500 deductible = $668".
  • Getting advice. The AI weighs pros and cons and nudges you toward one option. Try: Add: "The last line only says which costs less and by how much. No advice."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 70 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 18 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Counts the deductible
  • Shows the math
