About this exercise

You're comparing pet insurance for your dog. Work out what each plan would cost you in a year with one $2,000 vet bill: 12 months of premiums plus your share of the bill. Get exactly 3 numbered lines in plain text, under 80 words: one per plan with the math, then which costs less in that year and by how much. Use the corrected premium. No advice. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the old premium. The AI uses $25 for Plan B and misses the updated quote. Try: Add: "Plan B is now $30 a month."
  • Comparing premiums only. The AI says Plan B is cheaper and never works out the vet bill. Try: Say: "Add premiums, the deductible and my share of the rest of a $2,000 bill."
  • No math shown. The AI gives totals with no working, so you can't check them. Try: Show it: "1. Plan A: $40 x 12 = $480 + $250 + 10% of $1,750 ($175) = $905".
  • Getting advice. The AI weighs pros and cons and nudges you toward one option. Try: Add: "The last line only says which costs less and by how much. No advice."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 22 words."

What a strong prompt includes
