Take HIPP notes on a primary source

Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your US History class uses HIPP to source documents. Get exactly 4 numbered lines starting 'Historical context:', 'Intended audience:', 'Purpose:' and 'Point of view:', each under 18 words, plain text, about the letter only. Use only the source and its caption, and follow your teacher's note about who the letter was written to.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking for an analysis. The AI writes an essay about the letter instead of the four HIPP notes your quiz wants. Try: Give the labels: "4 lines: Historical context, Intended audience, Purpose, Point of view."
  • Not saying how many lines. The AI picks its own number, and it usually picks more lines than you need. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered lines."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each line: "each under 15 words."
  • Missing the teacher's note. The AI may guess the letter was public, which changes everything. Try: Add: "It's a private letter to her sister, per Mr. Delgado."
  • Inventing background. The AI may add facts about Lowell it remembers, which may not be accurate or allowed. Try: Add: "Use only the source, caption and class background."
