Apply three sociological perspectives to one campus example

Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your Intro Sociology exam asks you to apply the three major perspectives to one example. Get exactly 3 numbered lines starting 'Functionalist:', 'Conflict:' and 'Symbolic interactionist:', each applying that perspective to the campus meal plan example in under 22 words, plain text. Use only your professor's definitions, including her correction about conflict theory.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking for the perspectives. The AI defines all three in general, which earns half credit. Try: Say: "Apply each one to the meal plan example."
  • Not showing the labels. The AI writes paragraphs, so the three perspectives blur together. Try: Give the shape: "3 lines starting Functionalist:, Conflict:, Symbolic interactionist:."
  • Missing the correction. Your notes have conflict theory backwards. Try: Add: "Use Prof. Mendoza's correction about conflict theory."
  • Inventing details. The AI may add facts about meal plans that aren't in the example. Try: Add: "Use only details from the example."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each line: "each under 20 words."
  • Forgetting where it will be read. AI formats for a screen, with bold and headings that show up as stray symbols on the exam. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."

What a strong prompt includes
