Turn a messy group chat into a precise bug report
- For College students
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
Your club's AI-built event site has an RSVP bug, and you need to give the builder a precise bug report. Write a 'Title:' line, then exactly 4 numbered steps to reproduce it, then an 'Expected:' line and an 'Actual:' line. Use only what the chat shows to be true, not people's guesses. No code blocks, under 100 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Repeating guesses. The chat blames the wifi, and the AI includes it as a cause. Try: Add: "Only include what the chat shows to be true. Ben ruled out the wifi."
- Missing the pattern. The AI says 'RSVP is broken' instead of naming the event that fails. Try: Add: "Say it fails only on Rock 'n' Roll Night, the event with an apostrophe."
- No clear expected vs actual. The AI writes a story, so the builder can't tell what's wrong. Try: Add: "Expected: line, then Actual: line."
- Vague steps. The AI writes 'try to RSVP' instead of exact clicks. Try: Show it: "1. Open Rock 'n' Roll Night. 2. Click RSVP..."
- A long write-up with code. The AI guesses at code fixes in code blocks. Try: Add: "No code blocks, no fix ideas."
What a strong prompt includes
- Asks for steps
- Splits expected and actual
- Names the failing event
- Drops guesses
- Caps the length
