Get an AI builder to fix a gradebook average bug safely

  • For Teachers
  • You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Your AI-built class gradebook averages scores wrong. Write a follow-up prompt as exactly 4 numbered lines labeled Bug, Example, Change only, Check. The Example shows one student's scores with the wrong and right average. Be clear that blank cells and entered zeros are different. No code blocks, under 110 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Lumping blanks and zeros. 'Don't count zeros' would break your missing-work policy. Try: Add: "Skip blanks. Entered 0s still count."
  • No worked example. Without numbers, the builder can't tell if its fix is right. Try: Add: "Example: 90, 60, blank shows 50, should be 75."
  • Breaking what works. Last time the fix changed EX handling. Try: Add: "Don't change how EX works."
  • A long prompt with code. The AI writes a formula or code for the fix. Try: Say: "Exactly 4 numbered lines: Bug, Example, Change only, Check. No code blocks."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Separates blanks from zeros
  • Gives a worked example
  • Protects EX
  • Gives a check
  • Caps the length
