Give a classmate peer feedback in glows and grows
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're peer-reviewing a classmate's personal narrative opening for English class. Your teacher's sheet asks for exactly 4 numbered lines: 2 glows, then 2 grows, each labeled and quoting a phrase from the draft. Under 100 words, and the feedback must not rewrite any of your classmate's sentences, because the writing has to stay theirs. Write a prompt that gets that feedback.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not giving the sheet's shape. The AI writes paragraphs of general feedback with headings. Try: Show it: "Exactly 4 numbered lines: 1. Glow: \"quote\" - why it works."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 100 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "Each line under 22 words."
- Missing the weakest spot. The AI spreads its grows around and may skip the vague middle paragraph. Try: Add: "One grow must address the vague second paragraph."
- Rewriting it for them. AI loves to show "a stronger version", which turns peer review into ghostwriting. Try: Add: "Don't rewrite any sentence or suggest new wording. Say what to improve, not how to word it."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses the glow/grow shape
- Sets the number of lines
- Asks for quotes
- Bans rewriting
- Sets a word limit
