About this exercise

You're briefing the controller on the auditors' proposed adjustments. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Income effect (all):", "Above trivial:", "Versus materiality:", "Balance sheet only:", "Disputed:" and "For the controller:". Show the math. Do not say whether to book or pass any item; that decision is the controller's. Under 130 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Counting the reclass as income. The AI adds the $60,000 to the income effect. Try: Say: "Item 3 is balance sheet only, so keep it out of income effect."
  • Recommending book or pass. The AI advises on what to post. Try: Add: "Do not say whether to book or pass any item."
  • Hiding the dispute. The AI treats item 2 as agreed. Try: Add: "Disputed: name the item and both dates."
  • Ignoring the trivial line. The AI includes item 4 in the above-trivial total. Try: Add: "Above trivial excludes items under $5,000."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the six lines
  • Keeps the reclass separate
  • Bans a book-or-pass call
  • Asks for the math
  • Caps length
