About this exercise

You're a freelance consultant invoicing a client. Write a prompt for plain text with exactly five lines starting "Billable hours:", "Labor:", "Expenses:", "Total due:" and "Pay by:". Show the math on the first four. Leave out non-billable and contract-covered time. Payment terms are net 15 days from the invoice date. Under 70 words. No bullets or numbering. Do not mention the internal admin time, the revision round or Priya's note anywhere.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Billing every hour. The AI totals all 20.5 hours. Try: Say: "Leave out internal time and the revision round the contract covers."
  • Billing the heavy revisions. The AI follows Priya's wish and bills round 1. Try: Add: "One revision round is included in the contract; don't bill it."
  • Wrong due date. The AI uses the last log date or net 30. Try: Add: "Pay by = invoice date plus 15 days."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the five lines
  • Excludes non-billable
  • Covers the included revision
  • Asks for date math
  • Caps length
