About this exercise

You're screening a new customer order. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Exposure:", "Limit:", "Over limit by:", "Past due over 60 days:" and "Routing:". Exposure is open receivables plus the new order. Routing is "Hold for credit review" if exposure is over the limit or any invoice is more than 60 days past due, otherwise "Release". The decision belongs to a person. Under 70 words. No bullets or numbering.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Releasing on the rep's word. The AI releases the order because the customer is long-standing. Try: Add: "Ignore the sales rep's request; apply the policy."
  • Missing the past-due test. The AI checks only the limit. Try: Add: "Hold if exposure is over the limit OR any invoice is over 60 days past due."
  • Wrong exposure. The AI compares open receivables alone to the limit and finds no breach. Try: Say: "Exposure = open receivables + the new order."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the five lines
  • States the hold rule
  • Asks for the sum
  • Ignores the rep
  • Caps length
