About this exercise
You're processing a travel claim. Write a prompt for plain text with exactly five lines starting "Full days:", "Travel days:", "Meals provided:", "Per diem due:" and "Note:". The first four show the math; the Note line is one sentence about the receipts. Use the policy rates only. Under 70 words. No bullets.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Paying the receipts. The AI reimburses the $255 Tomas spent. Try: Add: "Per diem is a flat rate; receipts don't change it. Say so in the Note line."
- Treating all days as full. The AI uses 4 x $60. Try: Say: "The first and last days are travel days at 75%."
- Missing the meal deduction. The AI forgets the two conference lunches. Try: Add: "Deduct $15 for each meal provided."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the five lines
- Gives the 75% rate
- Deducts provided meals
- Handles receipts
- Caps length
