About this exercise
You're preparing a credit memo for a partial return. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Return value:", "Restocking fee:", "Credit memo:" and "Net due on the invoice:", each with the math. Apply the restocking fee as the policy says, and do not waive it. Don't mention the customer's defect claim. Under 70 words. No bullets or numbering.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Waiving the fee. The AI waives the fee because the customer says the goods are defective. Try: Add: "The fee applies until inspection; do not mention waivers or the defect claim."
- Net due from the return value. The AI subtracts $300 and gets $700. Try: Say: "Net due = $1,000.00 minus the credit memo."
- Missing math. The AI states amounts with no arithmetic. Try: Add: "Each line shows the arithmetic."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the four lines
- Gives the fee
- Gives the net due formula
- Bans the defect claim
- Caps length
