About this exercise

You're an AP clerk calling a vendor about a check that was never cashed. Write a prompt for a phone script of three labeled lines: "Open:", "Ask:" and "Close:", under 75 words in total, plain text. The Ask line asks whether they received check #1189 and, if not, whether the mailing address on file is correct. Don't say the check will be voided or replaced during this call.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Promising a replacement. The AI offers to stop payment and send a new check. Try: Add: "Do not say the check will be voided or replaced."
  • Missing the details. The AI says 'an old check' without number, amount and date. Try: Say: "Check #1189, $430.00, issued Jul 22."
  • No label structure. The AI writes a conversation with both sides. Try: Say: 'Three lines labeled "Open:", "Ask:", "Close:".'
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the three labels
  • Names the check details
  • Asks about address
  • Bans voiding promises
  • Caps length
