Brief an assistant to build tracking links to your naming rules

  • For Marketing and content
  • You practice Asking for a format you can use
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You want an AI assistant to fill your tracking-link sheet for the winter sale. Write its brief with your naming rules: utm_source is instagram, facebook or newsletter; utm_medium is paid-social or email; utm_campaign is winter-sale-2026; everything lowercase with hyphens. Skip any placement on hold and ask you about it with ASK_HUMAN, and never share the sheet. Output exactly 5 numbered plain-text lines: 3 add_row lines, ASK_HUMAN, DONE.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not showing the log format. Left alone, the AI writes a friendly report with headings instead of a checkable action log. Try: Show it literally: "Format every line like 1. ACTION: tool(args), then ASK_HUMAN: and DONE: lines. Plain text."
  • Not giving the values. The AI invents its own source and campaign names, so your reports split one channel into three. Try: Say: "utm_source instagram, facebook or newsletter; utm_medium paid-social or email; utm_campaign winter-sale-2026."
  • Copying the old style. The AI follows last year's mixed-case, spaced values. Try: Add: "Lowercase, hyphens, no spaces."
  • No hold or sharing rule. The AI builds a link for the placement on legal hold and shares the sheet with the agency. Try: Add: "Skip on-hold placements with ASK_HUMAN. Never share the sheet."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the exact values
  • Sets the case rule
  • Skips the on-hold placement
  • Forbids sharing
  • Shows the action-log format
