Brief an assistant to log party RSVPs and allergies

  • For Parents and households
  • You practice Asking for a format you can use
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You're hosting your daughter's birthday party and want an AI assistant to log the RSVPs. Write its brief: record each reply as Yes, No or Maybe exactly, send every Maybe to you with ASK_HUMAN, record allergies only when a parent states one, and finish with a DONE line that lists the confirmed kids by name with their count. It never messages parents. Output exactly 7 numbered plain-text lines: one per reply in order, then DONE.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not showing the log format. Left alone, the AI writes a friendly report with headings instead of a checkable action log. Try: Show it literally: "Format every line like 1. ACTION: tool(args), then ASK_HUMAN: and DONE: lines. Plain text."
  • No fixed statuses. The AI writes "probably" or "tentative" and guesses at Sophie. Try: Say: "Status is exactly Yes, No or Maybe. Every Maybe goes to ASK_HUMAN."
  • Inventing allergy notes. The AI notes "no cake" as a dietary need, or leaves allergies out. Try: Add: "Record an allergy only when a parent states one."
  • No count or messaging rule. The AI gives a total with no working and may text parents back. Try: Add: "Never message parents. DONE lists the Yes kids by name with the count."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Fixes the statuses
  • Handles allergies
  • Asks for the count
  • Forbids messaging
  • Shows the action-log format
