Brief an agent to tag customer feedback to fixed themes

  • For Product managers
  • You practice Asking for a format you can use
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You want an AI agent to tag this week's customer feedback for roadmap planning. Write its brief: give each item exactly one tag from Reporting, Integrations, Mobile, Billing or Other (never invent a new theme), skip spam with no tag, and end with a DONE line counting items per theme. Output exactly 9 numbered plain-text lines: one per feedback item in order, then DONE.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not showing the log format. Left alone, the AI writes a friendly report with headings instead of a checkable action log. Try: Show it literally: "Format every line like 1. ACTION: tool(args), then ASK_HUMAN: and DONE: lines. Plain text."
  • Not giving the theme list. The AI invents themes like "Dashboards" or "Competitor features", and your counts split. Try: Say: "One tag each from Reporting, Integrations, Mobile, Billing, Other."
  • No rule for junk. The AI tags spam as Other, padding the count. Try: Add: "Skip spam. Never create a new theme."
  • No summary line. Without counts you still have to tally by hand. Try: Say: "End with DONE: count per theme."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the fixed themes
  • One tag each
  • Skips spam
  • Forbids new themes
  • Says how to finish
