Brief an agent to recruit the right users for interviews
- For Product managers
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You want an AI agent to invite users to research interviews. Write its brief: invite only admins on paid plans who used Reports in the last 30 days, skip anyone interviewed in the last 6 months, draft invites but never send them, and ask you before any $50 gift card goes out. Output exactly 6 numbered plain-text lines: one draft_email per qualifying user in table order, an ASK_HUMAN line about the gift cards, then DONE.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not showing the log format. Left alone, the AI writes a friendly report with headings instead of a checkable action log. Try: Show it literally: "Format every line like 1. ACTION: tool(args), then ASK_HUMAN: and DONE: lines. Plain text."
- Not giving the criteria. The AI invites everyone who signed up, or picks people who sound engaged. Try: Add: "Only admins on paid plans who used Reports in the last 30 days."
- Forgetting recent interviews. The AI re-invites people you talked to a few months ago. Try: Add: "Skip anyone interviewed in the last 6 months."
- Letting it send or spend. Given send and gift card actions, the AI emails users and sends money on its own. Try: Add: "Draft only. Ask me before any gift card."
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the criteria
- Sets the usage window
- Skips recent interviewees
- Says draft, never send
- Holds the gift cards
