Answer a question about your work gap honestly and briefly

  • For Job seekers
  • You practice Getting the tone right

About this exercise

Interviewers keep asking about the gap on your resume. Get a spoken answer under 80 words, plain text, first person: state the real dates, the real reason, what you did during it, then end on why you're ready for this job. Use the corrected end date, call your course a "certificate of completion" (not a certification), and don't apologize.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Getting a guide instead of an answer. Ask 'how do I explain' and the AI returns tips, templates and a sample with blanks. Try: Ask for the answer itself: "Write my spoken answer, first person, under 70 words."
  • Missing the corrected date. The AI may use December 2025, the date you wrote on a form. Try: Add: "The gap ran March 2025 to February 2026."
  • Upgrading your course. AI turns 'certificate of completion' into 'QuickBooks certified', which an employer can check. Try: Add: "Call it a certificate of completion, never a certification."
  • Sounding sorry. The AI's default for a resume gap is apologetic, which makes it sound worse. Try: Add: "Don't apologize. End on why I'm ready for this job."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "4 sentences, each under 16 words."
  • Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your interview prep notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."

What a strong prompt includes
