Write an honest internship cover letter that names your recruiter
- For College students
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You're applying for a summer marketing internship. At the career fair last Thursday you met the recruiter, Mr. Tran, and he told you to mention that in your letter. Get a cover letter under 200 words that opens with "Dear Mr. Tran,", mentions the career fair in the first sentence, and ends with exactly "Best regards, Priya Raman" with no placeholders like [Address]. Every claim must be true: the posting asks for something you haven't done, and one number in your notes was corrected.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Leaving out the career fair. The AI writes 'Dear Hiring Manager' and a generic opener because it doesn't know you met anyone. Try: Add: "Open with 'Dear Mr. Tran,' and mention meeting him at the career fair in the first sentence."
- Letting the AI match the posting. The AI wants you to fit the job, so it writes that you're 'experienced in Premiere' and grabs the first follower number it sees. Try: Add: "I've never used Premiere, so don't claim it. Use 740 followers, the corrected number."
- Getting a template full of blanks. AI cover letters start with [Your Address] and [Date] lines and end with 'Sincerely, [Your Name]'. Try: Add: "No placeholders. End with exactly: Best regards, Priya Raman"
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "3 short paragraphs, each 2 or 3 sentences under 18 words."
