Explain a low GPA honestly in an application field
- For Job seekers
- You practice Getting the tone right
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
A job application has an optional box: "Anything else you'd like us to know?" Use it to address your GPA honestly. Get under 110 words, plain text, first person, starting with the exact words "My overall GPA is 2.6". Give the real reason and the upward trend with its numbers, and don't apologize: no "sorry", "unfortunately" or "I regret". Don't use the excuse your roommate suggested.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Getting an apology letter. The AI's default for a weak spot is to apologize, which makes a 2.6 sound worse than it is. Try: Add: "Don't apologize. No sorry, unfortunately or I regret."
- Not saying how to open. The AI opens softly ('I would like to take a moment to...') and buries the number. Try: Add: "Start with exactly: My overall GPA is 2.6"
- Not ruling out the excuse. The AI may borrow the mono story from your notes because it sounds sympathetic. Try: Add: "The reason is working 30 hours a week. I never had mono; don't mention illness."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each part: "4 sentences, each under 18 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in an application form box. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
