Score three venues for a club formal with weighted criteria

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your club's board is picking a venue for the spring formal using a weighted score: cost 40%, capacity 30%, distance 30%. Write exactly 3 numbered lines, one per venue, each showing the weighted math and total, then one final sentence with the pick. Rule out any venue that can't fit everyone who RSVP'd. Plain text, under 80 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Taking the top score blindly. The AI picks Riverside for its 4.1 and never checks it against the RSVP count. Try: Add: "Rule out any venue whose capacity is under the 180 yes RSVPs."
  • Hiding the math. The AI gives totals without the weights, so you can't check them. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Maple Hall: 4 x 0.4 + 5 x 0.3 + 3 x 0.3 = 4.0"
  • Leaving the shape open. The AI writes a table plus paragraphs of pros and cons. Try: Say "exactly 3 numbered lines, then one sentence with the pick."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 20 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in the board's group chat. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the weights
  • Checks capacity
  • Asks to show the math
  • Says how many lines
  • Asks for plain text
