Write the chief of staff's weekly operating review for the CEO
- For Executives
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
As chief of staff, write this week's operating review for the CEO, Malik. Use exactly three labeled sections in this order: Off track, Needs your decision, On track. Off track items say the metric against its current target. Put all on-track metrics on one line. Plain text, under 140 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not giving the sections. The AI writes a narrative recap, KPI by KPI. Try: Say: "Three sections in order: Off track, Needs your decision, On track."
- Using the stale target. The sheet still shows 45 days, so the AI calls cash cycle on track. Try: Add: "Apply target changes from the notes, not the sheet."
- Hiding the asks. Approval requests get buried inside each owner's update. Try: Add: "Pull every approval request into Needs your decision, with its cost."
- Spending words on good news. The AI writes a paragraph per green metric. Try: Add: "Put all on-track metrics on one line."
- Markdown headings. The AI uses bold headings and tables the CEO reads on his phone. Try: Say: "Plain text, section labels ending with a colon."
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the three sections
- Uses the updated target
- Pulls out the asks with costs
- Compresses good news
- Sets length and format
