Find inconsistencies across pages of a board pack
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Catching mistakes and made-up facts
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're doing a final consistency read of a board pack before it goes out. Write a prompt for exactly 3 checklist lines starting "- [ ]", one per inconsistency, each naming the pages and both figures, then a last line starting "Consistent:" naming what does agree. Flag; do not decide which number is right. Plain text, under 110 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the footing error. The AI doesn't add the segments and misses the $12.0M vs $12.4M. Try: Add: "Check totals by adding the segments."
- Picking a margin. The AI says 62% is right. Try: Add: "Flag only; do not say which number is right."
- No Consistent line. The AI lists only problems. Try: Add: 'Last line starting "Consistent:".'
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the line shape
- Asks for pages and figures
- Checks totals
