Rank campaigns by return on ad spend without recommending budget moves
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're ranking campaigns by return on ad spend (ROAS). Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Campaign | Spend | Attributed revenue | ROAS, sorted by ROAS from highest to lowest. ROAS = attributed revenue / spend, shown to one decimal with an x (for example 3.5x). Facts only: don't recommend moving budget or comment on attribution quality. No commentary. Under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Recommending budget moves. The AI suggests shifting budget from podcasts to email. Try: Add: "Do not recommend budget changes."
- Commenting on attribution. The AI repeats the director's attribution argument. Try: Add: "Do not comment on attribution or the director's belief."
- Wrong ROAS formula. The AI divides spend by revenue. Try: Say: "ROAS = attributed revenue / spend, with an x."
- Not sorted. The AI keeps A, B, C order. Try: Say: "Sort by ROAS from highest to lowest."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the columns
- Gives the formula
- Asks for sorting
- Bans commentary
- Limits output
