Estimate quarterly commission using the current tiers
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Catching mistakes and made-up facts
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're preparing a commission estimate for payroll review. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Closed bookings:", "Tier 1:", "Tier 2:", "Estimated commission:" and "Status:". Count only closed deals. Use the current plan, not the old one. The Status line is exactly "Estimate for payroll review, not approved for payment". Show the math on each of the first four lines. Under 70 words. No bullets or numbering.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Counting the pending deal. The AI includes deal C and gets $600,000 of bookings. Try: Say: "Count closed-won deals only."
- Using the old tiers. The AI applies the $400,000 threshold. Try: Add: "Use the current plan: 5% on the first $450,000."
- Missing the status line. The AI states the commission as final. Try: Quote the Status line exactly.
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the five lines
- Closed deals only
- Uses the current plan
- Quotes the status line
- Caps length
