About this exercise

You're reporting the contingency reserve. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Reserve:", "Used:", "Remaining:" and "Approval rule:", each with the math. Reserve is 3% of opex. Remaining is also shown as a percent of the reserve to one decimal. The Approval rule line states who approves releases over $50,000. Don't mention requests that haven't been made. Under 70 words. No bullets or numbering.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Mentioning the possible request. The AI adds that a $120,000 request would exceed the remaining reserve. Try: Add: "Do not mention any request that hasn't been submitted."
  • Wrong reserve base. The AI uses revenue or a different percent. Try: Say: "Reserve = 3% x the $8,000,000 operating expenses budget."
  • Missing the approval rule. The AI skips who approves. Try: Add: "Approval rule: CFO up to $50,000; CEO over $50,000."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the four lines
  • Gives the formulas
  • Asks for percent remaining
  • Bans unsubmitted requests
  • Caps length
