Write a KPI definition card from a thread with a correction
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You're documenting company metrics. Write a prompt for a plain-text definition card with exactly these labels, one per line and nothing else: "Name:", "Formula:", "Source:", "Owner:", "Refresh:", "Excludes:". Use the final definition from the thread, not an earlier version. Under 65 words. No bullets or numbering.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using MRR. The AI uses the first message's MRR formula. Try: Say: "Use the final definition: ARR, not MRR."
- Missing an exclusion. The AI excludes pilots but not new customers. Try: Add: "Excludes line must list pilots and customers who joined within 12 months."
- One owner only. The AI names one person for everything. Try: Add: "Say who owns the number and who owns the definition."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the six labels
- Uses final definition
- Splits owners
- Sets format
- Caps length
