Write a model change log entry with the impact math
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You documented a change to the revenue model today. Write a prompt for a plain-text change log entry with exactly these labels, one per line: "Date:", "Changed by:", "Location:", "Change:", "Impact on FY27 revenue:", "Reviewer:". The impact line shows the math. Include only the change that affects numbers. Under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Logging every change. The AI lists the formatting fix and file rename as changes. Try: Say: "Log only the change that affects numbers."
- Impact with no math. The AI writes 'revenue decreases' without the figure. Try: Add: "Show the math: base x (new rate - old rate)."
- Naming an unassigned reviewer. The AI puts Gil as reviewer. Try: Add: 'Reviewer: write "Pending" if nobody is assigned.'
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the six labels
- Limits to numeric changes
- Asks for impact math
- Handles reviewer
- Caps length
