About this exercise

You're summarizing a proposal to move some customers from Net 30 to Net 45 for the COO. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Cash tied up:", "Financing cost:", "Sales claim:", "Conflict:" and "Decision needed:". Use the AR system's share of revenue, not the sales memo's. Show the math. The Conflict line names both shares and what the cash tied up would be at the sales memo's share. The last line asks the COO what to confirm. Under 130 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the sales share. The AI picks 50% because the memo is more prominent. Try: Say: "Use the AR system's 40%; show the memo's 50% only on the Conflict line."
  • Accepting the revenue lift. The AI adds 3% revenue to the benefit. Try: Add: "Treat the sales claim as unsupported; do not include it in the math."
  • No visible working. The AI gives $400,000 with no steps. Try: Add: "Show multiplication and division for each result."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the five lines
  • Picks the data source
  • Asks for the math
  • Addresses the COO
  • Caps length
