- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're showing three price-increase scenarios to the CFO. Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Scenario | Price | Extra churn | New ARR | Change vs now, three rows (Low, Mid, High), with New ARR = current ARR x (1 + price) x (1 - extra churn). Whole dollars with commas. Facts only; no recommendation and no commentary. Under 90 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Adding price and churn. The AI nets +5% and -0.5% to +4.5% instead of multiplying. Try: Say: "New ARR = ARR x (1 + price) x (1 - extra churn)."
- Recommending High. The AI follows the Head of Sales' view. Try: Add: "No recommendation or comments on opinions."
- Missing the change column. The AI shows new ARR only. Try: Say: "Change = New ARR minus $2,000,000, with a sign."
- Wrong table shape. The AI uses different columns and adds notes. Try: Say: "Columns exactly: Scenario | Price | Extra churn | New ARR | Change vs now."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the columns
- Gives the formula
- Asks for change with signs
- Bans recommendation
- Limits output
