Rank three assumptions by revenue impact over their realistic ranges
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're ranking which forecast assumptions matter most. Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Assumption | Range | Revenue impact | Rank, sorted by rank. Revenue impact = the range size x the impact per unit, as a dollar amount. Rank 1 is the largest absolute impact. Don't give opinions about which assumption is more important. No commentary. Under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Ranking churn first. The AI follows the Head of Sales and ranks churn 1. Try: Add: "Rank from the numbers; do not mention the Head of Sales."
- Using the per-unit impact only. The AI ranks by $120,000, $80,000, $15,000 without the ranges. Try: Say: "Revenue impact = range size x impact per unit."
- Wrong table shape. The AI adds columns or notes. Try: Say: "Columns exactly: Assumption | Range | Revenue impact | Rank."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the columns
- Gives range x impact
- Defines rank
- Bans opinions
