- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You're analyzing support cost by channel. Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Channel | Tickets | Cost | Cost per ticket, three channel rows and a Total row. Cost per ticket = cost / tickets, in dollars and cents. Facts only: leave out any opinion about which channel to cut. No commentary. Under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Adding a recommendation. The AI says phone is costly and suggests cutting it. Try: Add: "Do not mention cutting any channel or the VP's view."
- Averaging the three rates. The AI averages $15, $25 and $60 to $33.33. Try: Say: "Total row uses total cost / total tickets."
- Missing columns or rows. The AI drops the Total row. Try: Say: "Rows: Email, Chat, Phone, then Total."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the columns
- Gives the formula
- Asks for a total row
- Bans opinions
- Limits output
