Estimate savings from a travel policy change with exempt trips removed

About this exercise

You're estimating annual savings from a new economy-fare rule. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Exempt trips:", "Eligible trips:", "Estimated annual savings:" and "Status:", each with the math. The Status line is exactly "Estimate only; actual fares vary". Don't mention executive complaints or any other savings. Under 60 words. No bullets or numbering.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Applying savings to all trips. The AI multiplies 40 x $180 = $7,200. Try: Say: "Remove the 25% exempt trips first."
  • Adding hotel savings. The AI mentions the hotel-night proposal. Try: Add: "Do not mention the executives' complaints or hotel savings."
  • Missing status line. The AI presents the figure as certain. Try: Quote the Status line exactly.
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each line short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the four lines
  • Gives the 25% exemption
  • Quotes the status line
  • Bans side topics
  • Caps length
