Compare two months of revenue per working day
- For FP&A and financial analysts
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
You're explaining a month-over-month revenue drop to the VP of Sales. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Raw change:", "October per day:", "November per day:", "Per-day change:" and "Read:". Divide by working days from the material. Show the math. The Read line states in one short sentence what the per-day numbers show, as a fact, with no forecast. Under 90 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Comparing raw months only. The AI says revenue fell 13.6% and stops. Try: Say: "Divide each month by its working days."
- Using weekdays. The AI uses 20 for November. Try: Add: "Use the working days in the material (19 for November)."
- Forecasting. The AI predicts December. Try: Add: "No forecast; one factual sentence."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the five lines
- Divides by working days
- Uses material days
- Bans a forecast
- Caps length
