Get questioned on your history answer instead of corrected

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You tried a US History review question on your own, and you want the AI to question you like a tutor so you find your mistake yourself, not hand you the right answer. Get exactly 3 numbered questions, under 75 words total, plain text, with no answers, explanations or corrections. The first question should lead you to the timeline problem in your answer, and every question must stay within your textbook excerpt.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking it to check your answer. The AI's default is to correct you and explain the right answer, so you read it instead of working it out. Try: Say: "Don't give me the answer or tell me what's wrong. Only ask questions."
  • Not saying how many questions. Without a number, the AI asks a long list or mixes questions with mini-lectures. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 numbered questions, nothing else."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each question instead: "each question under 18 words."
  • Not pointing at the weak spot. The AI may question you about anything in the chapter, not the timeline mistake that costs you points. Try: Add: "Question 1 should make me check what happened between 1915 and when the US declared war."
  • Letting rumors in. The AI may build on the group-chat claim or facts from outside your textbook, which your teacher won't accept. Try: Add: "Base every question only on the textbook excerpt."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says not to give the answer
  • Says how many questions
  • Points at the timeline
  • Limits each question
  • Keeps it to the excerpt
