Fill a referral cover note for a specialist's office
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're sending a referral packet to a specialist's front desk. Write exactly 5 lines labeled "Patient:", "Referred to:", "Insurance:", "Auth #:" and "Attached:", in that order, plain text, under 50 words, no bullets. Use the updated insurance and authorization, list only what's actually attached, and add no clinical opinions. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- No fixed shape. The AI writes a letter or a bulleted list with headings. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 5 lines: Patient:, Referred to:, Insurance:, Auth #:, Attached:. No bullets."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 50 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 12 words."
- Using the old insurance. The order shows the old plan first; the update comes later. Try: Add: "Use the new Arbor Health HMO and the auth number."
- Listing what isn't attached. The AI lists photos and labs because they're on the checklist. Try: Add: "Attached: only the checked items."
- Adding clinical opinions. The AI copies "probably benign" from the notes. Try: Add: "No clinical opinions."
What a strong prompt includes
- Shows the 5 labels
- Uses the new insurance
- Lists only what's attached
- Rules out opinions
- Sets a word limit
