Explain a caregiving gap in two honest sentences
Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Interviewers keep asking about the 9-month gap on your resume. Write the answer you'll say in at most 2 sentences, plain text: name caregiving for a family member as the reason, say what you did to stay current with the specific course from your notes, and end looking forward. Share no medical details about your father and don't apologize for the gap. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Over-explaining. The AI writes a whole paragraph, which invites more questions. Try: Add: "At most 2 sentences."
- Oversharing. To be honest, the AI mentions the stroke and rehab. Try: Add: "Say I was caring for a family member. No medical details."
- Naming the wrong course. The Google certificate appears first, but she only started it. Try: Add: "I finished Data Analytics Essentials from Cisco Networking Academy in July."
- Apologizing. The AI starts with "I know a gap can be a concern" or "Unfortunately". Try: Add: "No apology. End with what I'm ready for now."
What a strong prompt includes
- Limits the sentences
- Keeps health private
- Names the right course
- Bans apology
- Asks for plain text
