Write a LinkedIn About section without buzzwords

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're rewriting your LinkedIn About section. Keep it under 90 words, first person, plain text: the first sentence says what you do and for whom, include two results with numbers from your notes, and end with what you're looking for next. Use none of these: passionate, results-driven, synergy, dynamic, guru, and add nothing you haven't done. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "5 sentences, each under 18 words."
  • Opening with a tagline. The AI writes a catchy line like "Turning ideas into unforgettable moments" before saying what you do. Try: Add: "First sentence: what I do and for whom."
  • No numbers or no ask. The AI lists duties and forgets what you're looking for. Try: Add: "Two results with numbers, and end with the roles I want."
  • Using buzzwords. LinkedIn language pulls the AI toward "passionate" and "results-driven". Try: Add: "None of: passionate, results-driven, synergy, dynamic, guru."
  • Ignoring where it will be pasted. AI loves bold and headings, which show up as stray ** and # symbols in LinkedIn. Try: Name the place and the format: "For LinkedIn. Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says what you do first
  • Includes numbers
  • Bans buzzwords
  • Ends with the goal
  • Sets a word limit
