About this exercise

You have 60 seconds at Friday's all-hands and will read from your phone. Write a spoken talk track in plain text, under 110 words, with no greeting: the first sentence thanks Aisha, Ben and Carla on the Returns team by name for their win (use the final number). The last sentence is your one ask, submit Q1 time-off requests by Friday, Jan 10, with no sign-off after it. Share only confirmed news.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Burying the thank-you. The AI opens with 'Good morning everyone, I want to share a few updates.' Try: Say: "Open by thanking the Returns team for cutting refunds from 9 to 4 days."
  • Ending on a summary. The AI closes with 'Thanks everyone!' and the ask gets lost in the middle. Try: Say: "End with the one ask: Q1 time-off requests by Friday, Jan 10."
  • Repeating a rumor. The AI includes everything in the notes, even the unconfirmed hiring freeze. Try: Add: "Only confirmed news. Leave out the hiring-freeze rumor."
  • Writing slides, not speech. The AI gives bullets and bold headers you can't read aloud. Try: Add: "Spoken sentences only. Plain text, no bullets or bold."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 15 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says it's spoken
  • Sets a length
  • Puts the thank-you first
  • Ends with the ask
  • Asks for plain text
