Compare this year's cholesterol results with last year's

  • For Nurses and healthcare workers
  • You practice Asking for a format you can use
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Your annual cholesterol results are in, and you want to see what changed before your appointment. Get exactly 4 numbered lines, one per test, each like "1. LDL: 128 last year, 141 now, up 13", using the lab's corrected HDL value. Then one line starting "Ask Dr. Reyes:" with 2 questions. Don't say what the numbers mean for your health and suggest no diet or medicine changes. Under 90 words, plain text. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Missing the lab correction. The AI uses HDL 38 and reports it went down. Try: Add: "Use the lab's corrected HDL, 46."
  • Not fixing the line shape. The AI writes a paragraph per test with reference ranges and meanings. Try: Show it: "Format each like: 1. LDL: 128 last year, 141 now, up 13".
  • Letting the AI interpret. The AI echoes your brother about statins or gives diet tips, which is your doctor's call. Try: Add: "Don't say what the numbers mean. No diet or medicine suggestions."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each test line under 12 words."
  • Leaving the format to the AI. The AI adds a title, bold labels and sub-bullets, which turns a quick note into a page. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings, no intro."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Uses the correction
  • Compares with last year
  • Rules out interpretation
  • Asks for doctor questions
  • Sets a word limit
