About this exercise
Open enrollment ends Friday and you're comparing two plans for yourself. Using the visits you expect from your notes, get exactly 3 numbered lines in plain text, under 120 words: 1. Plan A's yearly total with the math shown; 2. Plan B's yearly total with the math shown; 3. which costs less for your expected use and by how much. Use the corrected Plan B premium, and add no advice beyond the numbers. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the printed premium. The AI reads the plan table first and uses $40, missing HR's correction below it. Try: Add: "Use HR's corrected Plan B premium of $45 per paycheck."
- Comparing only premiums. The AI compares paycheck costs and deductibles in general instead of adding up your actual visits. Try: Say: "Add premiums plus the cost of my expected visits and prescriptions for each plan."
- No math shown. The AI gives totals with no working, so you can't catch a mistake. Try: Show the shape: "1. Plan A: $95 x 26 = $2,470 + $370 visits and drugs = $2,840".
- Getting generic advice. The AI adds tips about HSAs, risk and who each plan suits, echoing the coworker. Try: Add: "Line 3 only says which costs less for my use and by how much. No advice."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 120 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each plan on one line, no working paragraphs, nothing after line 3."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses the corrected premium
- Counts expected use
- Shows the math
- Sets the number of lines
- Sets a word limit
