Write app store release notes users actually care about

Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're the PM for Tallyho, a grocery budgeting app, writing the app store "What's new" notes for version 3.2. Write at most 3 bullets, each starting with a verb and under 15 words, covering only changes users will notice. Skip internal work and the feature that was pulled before release, and use plain text with no heading.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Listing everything. The AI turns every ticket into a note, including internal work. Try: Add: "Only changes users will notice."
  • Announcing the pulled feature. Shared lists sounds exciting, so the AI includes it. Try: Add: "Shared lists was pulled; don't mention it."
  • Developer language. The AI writes "Refactored" and keeps ticket numbers. Try: Add: "Start each bullet with a verb users understand. No ticket numbers."
  • Too many bullets. The AI writes 6 bullets under a bold heading. Try: Add: "At most 3 bullets, plain text, no heading."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Limits to user-facing changes
  • Drops the pulled feature
  • Starts with verbs
  • Limits the bullets
  • Asks for plain text
