Ask a teacher to fix a missing grade, politely
Practice: Getting the tone right. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your son Owen got a 0 for an essay he turned in, and you need to message his teacher, Ms. Patel, through the school portal. She's new this year and you want to stay on good terms, so keep it friendly and assume an honest mix-up: no blame, none of your venting, and no filler like "I hope this finds you well". State when he turned it in against the extended due date, end with one clear ask, and sign it Rachel Kim. At most 5 sentences, plain text, no subject line. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Handing over your venting. The AI softens your draft but keeps its points, like "this isn't the first time" or a nod to the principal, which puts a new teacher on the defensive. Try: Add: "Assume an honest mix-up. Leave out earlier problems, Owen's stress and the principal."
- Accepting the stock opener. AI emails start with "I hope this email finds you well" and "I wanted to reach out", which waste a busy teacher's time. Try: Add: "Warm but brief. No filler openers."
- Not pointing to the proof. The AI writes "I believe he submitted it" instead of the date and the extension that settle the question. Try: Add: "Say he turned it in Oct 29 at 8:14 pm, before the Oct 30 extended due date from her Oct 26 email."
- Leaving blanks to fill in. The AI adds a subject line and signs off "[Your Name]", so you have to edit before sending. Try: Say: "No subject line. End with one clear ask and sign it Rachel Kim."
- No length or format limit. The AI writes a long, polished letter, sometimes with bold, that's too much for a portal message box. Try: Add: "At most 5 sentences, plain text."
What a strong prompt includes
- Sets the tone
- Leaves out the venting
- Points to the dates
- Limits the length
- Says who signs it
