Assign weekend charge nurses without unsafe back-to-backs

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're the unit manager assigning weekend charge nurses, and every 12-hour shift needs one charge-certified nurse. You want exactly 4 numbered lines (Sat day, Sat night, Sun day, Sun night), each as shift - nurse, under 35 words, plain text. Follow everyone's availability, the unit's rest rules, and the swap your manager approved, and don't use anyone who isn't charge-certified. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Missing the swap. Ana is listed as available Saturday, so the AI may still schedule her. Try: Add: "Ana is off; Dee takes Saturday day."
  • Not stating the rest rules. The AI puts Cruz on Saturday night and Sunday day, which is unsafe. Try: Add: "No two shifts in a row, and no day shift right after a night shift."
  • Using a non-certified nurse. The AI fills Sunday night with the float nurse because she's free. Try: Add: "Charge-certified nurses only."
  • Letting the AI pick the layout. The AI builds a grid with explanations. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 numbered lines like '1. Sat day - Dee'. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 35 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 8 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says how many lines
  • Uses the swap
  • States the rest rules
  • Certified only
  • Shows the line shape
