Turn club chat notes into a car wash checklist by due date

Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're the Key Club secretary planning Saturday's car wash fundraiser, and the advisor wants a checklist she can scan in the club's group chat. You need exactly 7 numbered lines, each written as Task (Owner, due day), sorted from the earliest due day to the latest, under 90 words, plain text. Use the current owner if a job changed hands, and leave out the ideas the club rejected. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Keeping the notes' order. The AI copies tasks in the order you wrote them, not by when they're due. Try: Add: "Sort the lines from earliest due day to latest."
  • Missing the handoff. Dev's name is next to supplies in the list, and the AI often keeps it. Try: Add: "If a job changed hands in the chat, use the new owner."
  • Including everything. The AI adds the rejected ideas as 'notes' and the dance reminder to be helpful. Try: Add: "Skip the ideas we voted no on and anything not about the car wash."
  • Letting the AI pick the layout. The AI makes checkboxes, headings and bold names, which look messy in a group chat. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 7 numbered lines like '1. Get permission slip signed (Marcus, Tue)'. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 8 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says how many lines
  • Gives the line shape
  • Sorts by due day
  • Handles the handoff
  • Sets a word limit
